how expensive is aviation fuel for a cessna?

October 12, 2008

how much is aviation fuel for a cessna and how much does it cost to maintain one?

The average price of aviation fuel ("100LL") in the U.S. is $4.52/gal with a low of $3.00 and a high of $7.42. However, fuel cost by airplane vary depending on the size of the fuel tank and where you are filling up (just like auto gas).
Prices from http://www.airnav.com/fuel/report.html

Operating costs also depend on the model. Most single engine piston Cessnas generally run between $15,000-$20,000 to operate and maintain annually. Example operating costs by specific make and model can be found here- http://www.planequest.com/operationcosts/

    As pointed out, fuel costs vary widely state to state, airport to airport, and full vs. self serve.
    Different Cessnas burn at different rates. The 150/152 will burn about 4.5-5 gals/hr. 172's can vary a lot depending upon year and engine; older ones average about 6 gals/hr. Newer models about 8. XP's with high horsepower about 9-10. 182's around 12-13. The big boys 206/210's will burn around 18-19 gals/hr but can haul heavy loads. Twins burn quite a bit more.

    Av8trxx has given you the gouge on the cost of 100ll aviation fuel.;

    I fly a Cherokee 180 similar in many ways to a Cessna 172w/ 180 hp. It consumes around 10gph, Annuals are about the same (sometimes more for the PA-28 because of some expensive AD's)
    insurance coverage about the same etc.
    My/our annual cost:
    $3600 hangar rent
    $ 900 insurance
    $1000-1800 annual/100 hr inspections (owner assisted)
    $13/hr for new engine fund
    $600 preventive mantenince
    I fly around 200+ hrs/yr fuel cost around $6000

    MALIBU CANYON,
    You are absolutely correct, however I was looking at it from what the uninformed general public perceives.
    Most people that see a small single engine plane calls it a Cessna.
    My numbers are based on the 172w/180hp

    If you get to fly one of Cessna's Jets, you are one VERY fortunate person. I am green w/ envy!!!!

    Assume about $4.50 for fuel, and 8 gallons an hour for a Cessna, for a total of about $36/hour for fuel. Assume your other hourly costs will double that. Insurance will be on the order of$700 a year for an average Cessna 172. Purchase price is between $40K and $200K depending on how old it is. Hangers cost $100-$300/ month. Check the local price. Your airplane will also require an annual inspection. Guess about $2000 for the first one and a little less then $1000 for the rest.

    Uh, guys, maybe you should re-work those numbers. There are more Cessna jets than any other make. One model I fly holds 11,223 pounds of fuel, or about 1700 gallons. "Cessna" covers an EXTREMELY broad spectrum.
