How much faster is a Cessna 182RG than a fixed gear 182?

November 3, 2008

I’m considering purchasing an aircraft. I’ve got time in 172’s and 182’s. I’m a pretty new pilot. I’m wondering if the increased cruise speed of the 182RG (Retractable Gear) makes it a more practical plane for me. I also wonder what additional costs are associated with the maintenance of the retractable gear.

On maintenance, you’ve got to jack the aircraft at 100 hour inspections, and do squat switch inspections, emergency extension inspections, check all the hydraulic lines, check the hydraulic pump, lights, up and down locks. Grease the gear, as well as maintenance on all the up and down limit switches.
