Flying in Papua – Cessna Caravan Landing on Mountain Strip

April 22, 2010

This video shows a landing into Sinak. A mountain strip which is pretty rough. We usually flew rice in there from time to time. As we arrived people from the village came running as can be seen at the end of the clip. People there can get pretty hungry and it has happened that violence has erupted over the rice bags. This strip can be tricky due to weather and wind. West Papua has some of the most challenging and dangerous flying on the planet. Its high mountainous terrain and unpredictable weather as well as remote strips make for very intense flying. Even the slightest off course deviation could mean smacking into a mountain. This type of flying can kill those that are not ready or comfortable with it. On bad weather days it can become very intense and demanding. My name is Ian Mathers. I am a Canadian professional pilot and C208B Caravan captain that has flown airplanes and ridden motorcycles around the world. I flew for Susi Air as a Caravan pilot in Sumatra and West Papua, Indonesia in 2007. The operations included part 135 charter, cargo and medevac. To lilflyboy262, Anything bigger and it starts flying itself. As a competition pilot myself the guys in PNG do a great job of precision flying and landing. Day in day out they land on strips that are far shorter than anything else in the world. And do tell – What exactly was wrong with his arrival proceedures, would you care to brief the plate for us?

it doesnt matter how the hell he entered the damn pattern, if he entered it while having sex or if he entered while jerking off. Truth of the matter is we’re sitting in front of a fucking monitor looking like fools and he’s over there probably laughting his ass off in the video while he enjoys his flight in his beautifull Grand Caravan and probly even thinking about his girlfriend named The Terminator back home.

Explain…..looked like a good arrival and landing to me….crossed midfield, joined the downwind for a nice square approach

How about that is really shit airplane management, piss poor planning, and if you are planning to move into anything bigger, then you really need to start replanning your arrival proceedures?

@swidd2..why don’t you go and wank yourself off over it as you have clearly rehearsed that story in your head many many times…MS flight sim perhaps!! Tit! Always some pratt trying to out do someone else. That was good flying and was interesting to watch.
